2019 Diversity Week

INA, Ill. (April 5, 2019) - The first week of April at Rend Lake College is dedicated to diversity. During the annual Diversity Week, cultural and international themed events are offered with the purpose of increasing awareness, understanding and inclusivity. The events are open to all students, faculty and staff and range from film showings to guest speakers and performers.

The two SIUE instructors entertained RLC students, faculty and staff and then took time to answer questions about their careers in music and professional history. 

Dr. Marsha Barrett3MDr. Marsha Barrett presented at RLC's Diversity Week. A professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, Barrett discussed her upcoming book about how partisanship and extremism has impacted the recent political climate in the U.S.

Lindy Drew2MLindy Drew shared her personal story and discussed her project "Humans of St. Louis" as part of RLC's Diversity Week. Drew's project gives voice to some of the voiceless and "hidden" members of society by using art and personal interviews to humanize them and share their stories on social media.

 LGBTQ PanelPanel members from RLC, Rainbow Cafe and the LGBTQ community shared their personal experiences coming out to loved ones. They offered those gathered ideas for supporting and affirming LGBTQ family members and friends. The panel provided an opportunity for those in attendance to ask questions.
