INA, Ill. (Feb. 12, 2019) – Spring is right around the corner, so Rend Lake College’s Community and Corporate Education Department has lined up a number of community learning opportunities to help shake off the winter doldrums.
Offerings kick off by taking participants for a walk (to the kitchen) on the wild side in Wildlife Cooking. In this hands on cooking class instructors Sawyer Nichols and RLC Chef Jeff Fairbanks will teach how to prepare the underutilized cuts of wild game in order to make the most of your hunting harvest in this one of a kind cooking class. The cost of the class is $20 plus a $35 supply fee. The class will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 1 at the Main Campus, Student Center, room 103.
With SAT Prep you’ll learn the reading, English, science, and math skills you need to do well on your SAT test. Test-taking skills will be emphasized. Students must purchase Barron’s SAT text-book, which will be available at the first session. The cost of the class is $75 plus $26.68 for the textbook. Instructors Kathy Patterson and Ryan Bruns will teach the class on from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays from March 4 to April 1 at the Murphy-Wall Pinckneyville Campus, room 102.
A professional cover letter and resume is crucial in today’s job search. In Resume Basics instructor Zach Rounds will guide you through the basic elements and formatting needed for an effective cover letter and resume that will stand above the rest. The cost of the class is $10, and it will be taught from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 in the Main Campus, Academic Building, room 215.
Hunter Safety class is a requirement in State statute for hunters born on or after January 1, 1980, when applying for a hunting license. Course includes: wildlife management, firearms safety, hunter ethics, game identification, first aid, survival techniques, and regulations. Pre-registration is required due to limited space. Must attend both sessions and bring a pen/pencil. There is no charge for this class. Students are required to attend the entire class which will extend over two days, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 and from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9. The class will be held at the Mt. Vernon MarketPlace Campus, room 354A.
Social Media Basics is a class that offers a great place to start for those looking to dive into the world of social media. Whether you're new to social media or just looking to close a few knowledge gaps, we're here to help! Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram are just a few of the social media sites we will discuss. The cost of the class is $10. Instructor Liz Jennings will teach the class from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at the Mt. Vernon MarketPlace Campus, room 338.
In Basic Handgun Training learn the basics of using a handgun. The instructor will give you a brief overview of the laws pertaining to civilian use of force, types of handguns, and ammunition. Learn about the proper stance, gripping, loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions, firing a handgun and the rules of the range. You will get to step out on the range and practice the techniques you learn in the classroom. Bring ear and eye protection, your own handgun, ammunition (150 rounds) and valid FOID card. Wear old clothes. Must be 18 years of age or older. The cost of the class is $65. Instructor: Jeff Bullard will offer three chances to take the class, all taking place at the Main Campus, Applied Science Center, room 102.

Once you’ve gotten the basics down learn more of the advanced techniques to firing a handgun in Advanced Handgun Training. The classroom portion of this session will be more in depth as the laws of civilian use of force are covered. Also, learn about weak hand shooting, one hand shooting, one hand reloading, shooting on the move, and range rules. The range portion of this session will test your marksmanship using the techniques you learned about in class. Bring ear and eye protection, your own handgun, ammunition (150 rounds) and valid FOID card. Wear old clothes. Must be 18 years of age or older. Students must have completed Basic Handgun Training. The cost of the class is $65. Instructor: Jeff Bullard will offer two chances to take the class, all taking place at the Main Campus, Applied Science Center, room 102.
